Hi! My name is Carla Hyslop..

I got my first skateboard at nine years old and recall it to be one of the most difficult things that I've ever learned how to do, but I soon became hooked. When I first learned about skateparks at age 16 they became my homes away from home where I learned tricks, overcame fears, became confident, found community and developed a lifelong love of skateboarding.

Partly through spending time at skateparks during my teens and early 20's, I became passionate about working with children and youth and ultimately obtained a degree from the University of Victoria in Child and Youth Care. While in the program, I wrote a research paper theorizing the mental health benefits of skateboarding which I have included at the bottom of this page.

Although I specialize in working with children and youth, I teach skateboarding to all ages and believe it is never too late to learn!
I am as passionate about my own skateboarding as I am about providing individualized progressive yet self-paced, boundary-pushing yet safe lessons. My focus is to enable easy and comfortable access to skateboarding and skateparks, especially to those experiencing barriers such as gender, sexual orientation, age, and mental or physical disabilities.

I strive for each participant of BOLD Skate to accomplish their goals, challenge themselves, gain confidence and experience the creative and collaborative community of lifelong learners and teachers that call themselves skaters.
