Carla has been teaching skateboarding to my six-and-a-half years old daughter Anya over the past summer. Through their weekly lessons at Vic West skate park, they have built an amazing relationship. Coming to a skate park for the first time was rather intimidating for Anya, but thanks to Carla’s kind encouragement she soon felt comfortable practicing alongside other skaters.
Carla’s teaching approach is based on the foundation of respect for safety and keen sense of the student’s unique combination of strengths and weaknesses. In my daughter’s case, Carla continuously adjusted the level of exercises to match Anya’s skill level. This allowed Anya to safely build confidence and to begin truly enjoying the sport of skateboarding. From tentatively searching for balance on the board when she first started, Anya progressed to skating down some ramps and enthusiastically learning basic tricks like drop-ins and ollies.
Perhaps most importantly, Carla very impressively built trust with her young student, which allowed them to share Carla’s passion for skating. Without a doubt, these skateboarding lessons have been a highlight of Anya’s summer, and I hope that Carla continues to build the vibrant community of young skaters in Victoria.

My very clumsy daughter came to me and asked if she could learn how to skateboard. I didn’t want to prevent her from doing something she wanted to do, and yet I was very hesitant to encourage her because she is also very anxious and shy. We have tried team sports and individual sports, but nothing has spoken to her. I decided to look into skateboarding lessons and when I was talking to friends, I heard about Carla. I was instantly put to ease when I spoke to her and I am so glad that I stepped out of my comfort zone and contacted her.
When I mentioned to Carla about my concerns about my daughters anxiety and clumbsiness, not to mention my concerns about the subculture that used to permeate the skatepark, Carla’s enthusiasm quickly put me to ease. She is a self-identified klutz who understands adolescent mental health and anxiety and she is passionate about getting young girls onto skateboards and into the skate park. She acknowledged my fears and invited us to come down and see the changes in the culture at the skate park.
My daughter has been at the skate park almost every day since her first lesson with Carla. She has found her passion in skateboarding and she has also found her voice at the park. I cannot thank Carla enough for all of her patience and her contagious enthusiasm.
